Call for Proposals

The Georgia Association of Historians invites proposals from professional historians and current graduate students of history working in the state of Georgia and throughout the United States for its February 2021 annual conference, February 5-6, which, out of an abundance of caution, will take place virtually for the first time. We welcome submissions pertaining to all areas and subfields of history, preservation, and pedagogy. We also encourage innovative session formats such as roundtables and moderated discussions as well as traditional paper sessions. Proposals for full sessions are encouraged, but not required. We also welcome interested undergraduates to submit digital poster proposals to be displayed on the Association’s website.

Accepted papers may be submitted for consideration to the peer-reviewed Journal of the Georgia Association of Historians, though conference acceptance does not guarantee journal publication.

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Nancy Bristow, Professor of History at the University of Puget Sound will be our keynote speaker. The title of her presentation will be “Steeped in the Blood of Racism: White Supremacy and Police Violence at Jackson State College, 1970.”

This year’s conference registration will be only $30, which includes the $10 GAH membership fee. We hope that this small registration fee and the virtual format will accommodate scholars who are finding their travel and conference funds reduced in the wake of the pandemic. While we look forward to meeting in person in 2022, we want to ensure that the vital role of scholarship exchange is not diminished by necessarily shrinking budgets. Please consider joining us!

The deadline for proposal submission is October 8, 2020.
Notification of a proposal’s acceptance will occur in November 2020.
Accepted papers will be due to the chairs/commentators by January 10, 2021.

All proposals should include a 250-word description of the paper, session, roundtable, or poster and a one-page vita for each presenter. If a proposed session/roundtable is accepted without a chair/commentator, one will be assigned by the program committee.

Send electronic proposals in Word or PDF format to Program Chair Thomas Aiello at:  georgiaassociationofhistorians@gmail.com. Save the entire panel proposal (include individual abstracts, panel description, contact information, and one-page vita for each participant including the chair and commentators) in one document labelled with the organizer’s last name, type of session, and title of proposal: ex: Lastname_Type_Title.docx; or Lastname_Type_Title.pdf.

Papers must be original works of scholarship.  Due to time constraints, individual papers will be limited to 15-20 minutes.  Roundtables should be structured to fit a ninety-minute time slot.  (While presenters must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in hand at the time the proposal is submitted, undergraduates may submit posters.)

Chairs/Commentators: Scholars interested in serving as chair/commentator should contact the Program Chair, Thomas Aiello, at: georgiaassociationofhistorians@gmail.com. Please include a brief description of your field/areas of expertise along with a one-page vita.
